Prevent and Get Rid Of Ticks & Fleas On Dogs Safely

Before we begin sharing how to prevent and get rid of ticks & fleas on dogs safely, keep in mind the following:

1. There’s no way to prevent ticks and fleas 100%, FOREVER. Yes, you’re reading this correctly. Not even with pills, shots, toxic drugs or topicals. Proper care can prevent at least 95% of the oncurrences. However, knowing how to provide care holistically is essential knowledge for every dog parent.

2. This blog is complementary to the video embedded here. Be sure to watch the entire video, read this blog, and check the resources provided to get the full picture on the subject of ticks and fleas on dogs.

3. I highly recommend you dig into this subject yourself. I’m not a vet, and I’m not sharing what you should do. I’m sharing what we’ve decided to do based on a lot of research, as well as discussions with our holistic veterinarians over the years. Our method is working for us, but you’ll have to do some of your own research and decide what’s best for your pup. Any general recommendations we make are not substitutes for veterinary care and are for informational and educational purposes only.

LET’S WATCH THE VIDEO FIRST

TICKS AND CHEMICALS

Even before we switched to holistic care for the Husky Squad, Jc and I have never felt comfortable using chemicals for our dogs. Those chemicals are in all conventional sprays, topicals, bombs chewables and collars. You may slightly reduce the risk of Lyme (and other diseases), and it’s NOT guaranteed, but… instead, your dog may likely experience side effects such as chronic digestive issues, internal organ damage, cancer, and a host of other overall health problems. The list is SCARY.

LYME DISEASE INJECTIONS

After researching and learning about Lyme disease, and discussing this disease with holistic veterinarians, Lyme disease injections is not something we give our dogs. We don’t inject them with any drugs for that matter, but that’s an entirely separate subject that is controversial to those who are unaware of the associated health risks in dogs. Unknown to some dog parents, injections never prevent ticks from latching on to any coat. Regardless, Lyme disease injections have a low efficacy rate and their toxic health effects don’t merit their use.

THE LYME DISEASE TOPIC

Although perpetuated to be one of the scary monsters out there, Dr. Karen Becker calls it: “The Feared Canine Disease that’s Mostly Benign.” Lyme disease can be an issue and should be taken seriously, but it’s definitely over-hyped. There’s a lot of money to be made from fear and selling subscription-style drugs.

I was reluctant to discuss this “sensitive” subject publicly, but for many years now we’ve been receiving so many questions from health-conscience dog parents who are desperately seeking alternatives to the conventional, toxic approach to ticks and fleas, so I feel it’s important to open the conversation on this topic.

7 STEPS TO PREVENT TICKS & FLEAS ON DOGS

Before you continue further, if you’re ONLY looking for medications, sprays, and conventional (toxic) solutions, this blog is not for you. But if you’re a dog mom like me who understands the logic of preventive, and holistic care – read on! I’m sharing with you transparently what Jc and I have been doing to prevent ticks and fleas for over a decade, and how we deal with it on the rare occasion it happens.

1. Raw Garlic:

According to all holistic veterinarians we’ve discussed this with, tiny, properly measured doses of raw garlic makes your pup less attractive to ticks during tick season. Dr. Karen Becker recommends 1/4 tsp freshly raw chopped garlic per 15lbs of body weight per day. I always slowly introduce any new natural medicines and foods, on a steady pace over the course of at least two weeks. Check with your holistic veterinarian on what’s best for your dog.

2. A Clean Environment

I learned over time that a clean home is not enough. I put extra care into washing dog bed covers often, using washable rugs and sofa covers, and I vacuum frequently. All these steps are especially helpful for flea breakout prevention.

3. Apple Cider Vinegar

Giving your dog 1/2 tsp of apple cider vinegar per day, per 25 lbs of body weight can be another helpful addition for your dog if you live in a tick and flea prone region. Add it to your dog’s food or water bowl. The apple cider vinegar will make your pup less appealing to ticks and fleas.

4. A Grooming & Bathing Routine

A proper grooming and bathing schedule helps tremendously. We like to groom our dogs twice a week, and bathe them at least every 2 to 4 months, depending on where we live and how dirty they get during that season of the year.

5. A Healthy And Toxic-Free Lifestyle

I only use purified water, healthy dog dishes, toxic-free shampoos, and healthy cleaning supplies. Holistic veterinary care, daily exercise, and reducing the use of conventional toxic medicine, antibiotics, and injections, help your dog have a healthy immune system to fight off disease with ease, Lyme disease included!

6. Natural Topicals

Natural topicals are a great tool if you live in a region that is more prone to ticks and fleas. I use natural sprays and rubs after bathing and before hikes when we live in or visit a tick and flea-prone region. However, keep in mind, these will help drastically, but they won’t prevent ticks and fleas 100%. I like the brands below, and I also make my own topicals using natural ingredients.

7. Nothing Impacts Health & Immunity More Than Food

Kibble is highly processed, filled with additives, chemicals, void of nutrition, and lacks essential species-correct food for dogs. Ticks & fleas are drawn to animals with weaker immune systems. We all know a healthy, fresh food diet impacts our own health tremendously, and it goes the same for all living creatures, dogs included. Learn about ditching kibble and feeding your dog real food. A simple, and species-correct diet has incredible overall health benefits for your dog. A healthy body fights off disease with ease.

HOW TO GET RID OF TICKS

In tick prone regions, it is imperative to check your pup right after being outside or spending time in nature. Catching ticks early before they attach is your best bet! Check yourself too.

Post Outdoors

The steps I take after spending time outdoors:

  1. Ticks would not be attached at this phase which is a great opportunity to prevent latching and disease transmission.
Keep an eye out if I see a tick on our pups while we’re outdoors, and remove immediately if I do.
  2. As soon as we get home, I gently check for ticks floating on their coat while combing with my hands and fingers.
  3. I proceed with brushing them to remove matting or clumps of fur to prepare for easy combing.
  4. I gently proceed with combing with a lice comb or a long toothed comb through the entire body. Any ticks will easily be found and combed out.
  5. After that, I use a short fine-toothed comb (or flea comb) on the entire length of their legs and paws. Any ticks will come out quickly!

Husky Squad’s Amazon Shop

In our Amazon Shop, you’ll find the preventive products we use, and what we use to manage tick and flea incidents.

Tick Removal

Removing ticks incorrectly can cause infections. The most common mistake is using a tweezer which often leaves the tick’s head attached to your dog’s skin, which can become very difficult and painful to remove. Be safe and use a proper tick remover according to the size of the tick.

TIP: Buy a small clear container with a tight twistable lid to safely store a tick in case you’ll need it for testing.

Immediately flush the tick down the toilet to avoid it finding a new host. Be sure to wash your hands.

Cleaning the Tick Bite Area

After removing the tick, Dr. Karen Becker recommends cleaning the bite area with diluted betadine. After it’s clean, use a soothing natural skin spray to heal the wound.

Next Steps

Be sure to dive into the Additional Reading & Resources section below. These are additional recommendations from Dr. Karen Becker and other veteranarians we trust.

Sure, it will take you about 15-20 minutes per pup once you have the routine in place, but it’s so worth it. Ticks don’t attach immediately, so it’s worth catching them before they do!

If you missed a tick, or if you’ve forgotten to do tick-care after spending time outdoors, you may find a tick attached to your pup and you will need to remove it safely as soon as possible. The longer the tick is attached, the higher the chances are for disease transmission.

How to Get Rid of Fleas

Although I only found three fleas on one of our pup’s in our entire time of dog parenthood, I followed parts of this natural protocol aggressively, and we prevented a full breakout! We were staying in an AirBnB in Croatia at the time during our European adventure, and we were adamant to get rid of the problem the moment we identified the issue. We’ve traveled and lived in so many countries, states and cities by now, and I’m fairly confident that focusing on natural preventatives is the reason why we’ve not had ongoing flea problems or periodic breakouts. If you ever see a single flea, it’s best to attack the situation as if you’re experiencing a full breakout. Doing this will prevent the rapid, explosive outbreaks fleas can bring.

MY CLOSING THOUGHTS

We covered a lot in this blog about how to prevent and get rid of ticks & fleas, and my hope is that you gained clarity, and you’re feeling empowered to tackle this subject with confidence and actionable steps based on what you feel is best for your dog. We’ve unnecessarily outsourced so much of our fur-kids (and our) health wisdom to conventional toxic drug companies and “(sick) care”. Only in very recent years of human history, we got ourselves stuck in perpetual cycles of disease without solutions due to this modern, toxic riddled lifestyle. However, many of us are seeking to re-learn ancient wisdom, and find newer toxic-free solutions. I hope this blog gave you what you were looking for, and helped expand your arsenal of holistic living for you and your dog.

7 KEYS TO TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR DOGS HEALTH

Kimahri with Mama Wolf Vee

Take Control of Your Dog’s Health in 7 Steps

Our dogs don’t come with a manual, and we’re often left to figure things out on our own. Every dog parent we’ve met over the years wants the best health for their dogs, but most don’t know where to begin and it can feel overwhelming. We’ve been dog parents since 2009 and I like passing on some gold nuggets to you to get you started.

Let’s begin with 7 keys to take control of your dog’s health.

I don’t want you to feel overwhelmed. Instead I recommend to begin implementing each step one week apart, and you’ll feel amazing once you’ve reached these goals. The extra bonus : this is going to impact your own life in such a positive way, too.

Let’s dive in.

1. SWAP TO PURIFIED WATER.

City tap water is filled with dangerous toxins, heavy metals, chemicals, and literally poisons. These unwanted ingredients are often the cause of so many short and long term health ailments such as nervous system damage, organ damage, organ failure, reproductive issues – all the way to cancer. Well water can contain contaminants too!

So what can we do? Buy bottled water? Not only is bottled water expensive, it’s also not properly purified or safe. On top of that, these mass produced cheap plastic bottles leach chemicals into the water.

Let’s talk about the affordable solution: The Water Purifier.

Not all water filters are created equal, and many water purification systems can be very expensive. If you’re using something like Brita or similar, the water remains filled with contaminants and toxins that are unsafe to drink for all of us. After weeks of research, I finally found an affordable and high quality brand water filter for our entire family. I was so stoked to find a brand that I’m confident to recommend to you. We filmed a dedicated video on this subject you can watch below.

AFFORDABLE WATER PURIFICATION

I reached out to Epic Water Filters and the company was kind enough to extend a discount code for you to use on your entire order.

If you’re on city tap water, the Epic Pure Pitcher is right for you. If you’re on a well, the Epic Nano Pitcher is best for you. Be sure to use the code HUSKYSQUAD during checkout to take advantage of the discount.

2. HEALTHY SNACKS.

It’s so easy to be fooled by dog treats in pet stores. Flashy words like “healthy, natural, dental care…” you name it – makes these treats seem safe for dogs. Unfortunately, in the ingredients lurk endless chemicals, color, many unsafe products, and fillers. The majority of dog treats are loaded with foods that are not species appropriate for dogs, like gluten, carbs, corn, legumes, soy … the list is endless. Rawhide is extremely unhealthy for dogs too!

AN EASY SOLUTION: SIMPLE REAL FOOD. You may already have some of these at home.

Here’s a list to get you started:

  • Any kind of raw, fresh or frozen (ideally organic) berries. These make great mini training treats too, especially blueberries. Berries are packed with antioxidants and it’s wonderful for all of us.
  • Organic, pasture raised hard cheeses in very small amounts and on special occasions. Little bites are amazing for training sessions. Some dogs can be allergic to cow dairy, and goat cheese can be a fantastic alternative.
  • Single ingredient, freeze dried raw meat based snacks. You can find these in local, smaller mom-and-pop, healthy pet food stores – or you can get them online too. I’ve added some here to our Amazon list. You can get treats like minnows, beef liver nibs, chicken heart nibs, cod skins, etc. The ingredient list will have only ONE ingredient.
  • Celery sticks. Some dogs turn their noses up, but many of them LOVE IT. It’s low calorie, healthy, hydrating, and wonderful for the digestive tract.

Just keep in mind: treats are just that “treats” and should account for the total food amount for the day to avoid overeating. Too many treats on top of the daily food intake can lead to obesity and host of other health issues.

3. NON-TOXIC BOWLS.

For food, ditch the plastic, it leaches chemicals into your beloved pup’s food (and water). Stainless steel can collect rust often invisible to the bare eye until there’s a lot of it. Yikes.

We’ve been using these fantastic, non-slip ceramic bowls for years, and we highly recommend them. Just make sure you wash them after EACH meal to avoid bacteria growth. If they chip for whatever reason – they must be discarded.

For water, these 100% clear glass bowls are my favorite. I like a nice large size bowl that’s deep and heavy, sitting on a non-slip silicone mat. I run the bowl through the wash frequently to keep it clean. Watch our video on this subject here.

4. DITCH THE TOXIC HOUSEHOLD SUPPLIES.

This will impact you and your entire household positively. Chemicals and toxins lurk in typical floor cleaners, dish detergent, laundry detergent, (dog) shampoos, soap bars, deodorant, moisturizers, dryer sheets, lotions, you name it! These toxic substances are extremely damaging to all of us, and dogs included. I will include a link here to a video we created dedicated to this subject and you’ll be so glad to see how easy it is to make the change. I also highly recommend the eye opening documentary on this topic: Chemerical.

There are so many healthier, non-toxic options available today, and they are more affordable than ever. Toxicity causes expensive, and extremely damaging ailments which can be easily prevented. While I found great options in many supermarkets, Grove became my favorite home delivery choice for toxic-free household supplies. I’ve been a member with them since late 2019, and I’ve not looked back since.

5. DAILY FITNESS.

This is a no brainer, right? Unfortunately, many dog parents share how they barely exercise their pups twice per week. I don’t feel this is on purpose. We all love our dogs and want the best for them. Sometimes stress, a busy schedule, and self-neglect can cause this, but it doesn’t have to be this way!

Here are a couple of tips to get you unstuck, and enjoy DAILY fitness with your pup:

  • Choose comfy shoes according to the season and climate. Don’t hold back from getting yourself a pair of good rain boots, hiking shoes, and comfy street sneakers. Winter calls for warmth, and I don’t know about you – but I like to keep my toe beans warm. I love my insulated winter boots and thick, warm, woolen socks.
  • Wear the right seasonal clothing. People are often shocked how we take the Squad for walks – even during frigid temperatures. Well, we have great winter coats, boots, socks, hats, gloves and scarves – and they absolutely work!
  • Build a routine you can easily follow. This will look different for everyone! For example, as soon as you get home from work, change clothes, throw on these comfy shoes and head out right away. Make it a habit not to do anything else before completing this task. This will help you decompress, enjoy a great evening, and better sleep. Another option can be: wake up an hour earlier and begin your day with a beautiful sunrise walk for the day. This will have a great impact on your entire day. Choose what works for you. After sticking to it for three days, you’ll have a fantastic new habit developed.
  • Take your favorite drink with you on your walk. Our summers call for a refreshing iced homemade berry drink, and winter calls for cozy hot chocolate in our favorite insulated to-go mugs.
  • Grab a friend to join you in what we call #GetTheHuskyOut – because we all need to get our fitness needs met. Holding each other accountable will lock you in!

Daily fitness for your pup has so many benefits, and would need an entire blog on its own to scratch the surface. You’ll prevent health issues, keep a trim weight, improve mood, improve relaxation, promote an overall healthy physique, better digestion, and yes – a longer life – for both of you!

6. REAL FOOD

Let’s see. Do you think it’s healthy to eat cheap, dry cereal with over 30 ingredients for your entire life? I highly doubt it! Somehow, kibble companies, big-box pet food stores, and mainstream veterinarians managed to convince the masses that dogs (and cats) can live a healthy life to eat this way. Not only is this extremely unfair to any living being, it’s also extremely unhealthy.

How were we convinced?

They managed to create a narrative that there’s no way dog parents can have the knowledge to put together simple, complete and healthy meals for their dogs, made of real food. They managed to convince modern society to put the health and lives of our beloved dogs in the hands of greedy corporations who are clueless about nutrition and motivated by their huge profit margins.

The convenient and obvious detail which is left out: dogs have successfully been our companions for thousands of years, and have lived and thrived on real food throughout our joined history. Meanwhile, kibble has been around for less than a century. Go figure…

The kibble industry and its entire octopus of connections convinced people to be afraid. Marketing works. This is why companies spend a fortune on marketing to make things flashy, appealing, and driven by emotion. Kibble makes a few people a lot of money, supports the pharmaceutical industry who massages modern veterinary education, and keeps a tight grip on what their vets are allowed to prescribe (more kibble!). This results in a cycle which keeps many people trapped and insecure in their own abilities to be the dog parent they can easily be. How dare we question something that lacks so much reason and logic?!

Meanwhile, 50% of the domesticated dog population is diagnosed with cancer by 6-7 years young. Dogs suffer from allergies, chronic digestion issues, dental disease, enlarged heart problems DCM (often fatal), skin problems, obesity, and spend many years going from one drug to another without resolution.

Well, times are changing. The 21st century I feel is a time of awakening. Although we were raised to follow the crowd, many of us put the fear aside because deep down we know we deserve better, and so do our dogs. Dog parents around the world are taking theirs and the health of their beloved dogs into their own hands. They take the time to learn the foundation of a species correct diet for their dogs, ditch the kibble, and switch to holistic care to promote a long, and amazing quality of life.

Ditching kibble is by far the best thing you can do for your dog!

YOUR DOG COULD BE EATING LIKE THIS

7. REAL, CLEAN SUPPLEMENTS

Let’s get the most important thing out of the way. Supplements are exactly that: Supplements. The solid nutritional foundation is a species correct, fresh food diet – and nothing can replace this foundation. Supplements are there to provide natural healing, and additional benefits through high quality, clean, and natural sources.

The majority of supplements are made from cheap, low quality ingredients, and they do way more harm than good. They might as well be avoided all together. Any supplements we give are highly researched for its sourcing and quality or provided directly through our holistic veterinarian who often even creates some of them himself. You can read further details in our blog “The Best Supplements For Dogs.”

MY CLOSING THOUGHTS

Taking control of your dog’s health is an amazing and rewarding experience. Learning and researching is a lifelong journey, but with every step we take, we set ourselves up for a beautiful healthy flow and long life.

With each step you take, you’ll feel more empowered, more connected to your beloved dog, and more in tune with both of your natural needs. You’ll both be rewarded with better health, a more relaxed mind, and deeper shared fulfillment.

Did you find these 7 keys helpful? Which step are you going to start out with? I’d love to read your thoughts in the comments section below.

10 Home Products Every Dog Parent NEEDS

10 Home Products Every Dog Parent NEEDS

Husky Squad Approved Home Products

10 Home Products Every Dog Parent NEEDS

What are the most practical, useful dog home products to help you enjoy being a dog parent? We gathered a list to make your life cleaner, easier, and more pleasant all around for both you and your dog.

Over the years we’ve gone through our share of frustrations with dog beds, dog bowls, and many other products. There are too many choices available, but many of them lack the foundation of what we wanted out of a product. A clean home is of utmost importance to us, and with three huskies, it can definitely be a challenge. We had to figure out ways to keep the husky hair at bay, and out of our coffee! 😀 #floofeverywhere

What’s important in a dog home product for us?

  1. Practicality. The product needs to be practical, functional, and easy to use. It also can’t be bulky.
  2. Durability. Of course each product needs to be well made, durable, and last long-term. I used to focus on price, but now I know “cheap” comes at a cost and the product will need to be replaced sooner than later, and therefore ends up being more expensive long term.
  3. Comfort. What’s a bed without comfort? An uncomfortable bed, right? The products we choose must be comfortable to use, regardless if it’s me doing the work, or the Husky Squad making use of them.

… and aesthetics. Because #whynot

OUR TOP 10 MUST HAVE DOG HOME PRODUCTS

Whether you’re a new dog parent or if you’ve been one for a while, you’ll enjoy these practical, convenient products to outfit your home. Your dog will obviously join all the fun, and together you’ll live a cleaner, more comfortable, stress-free life.

In the video below, I show you each product we use, how we use it, and why we chose it over the hundreds of options out there. For example, you’ll most definitely need a dog food bowl to feed your beloved fur-kid, but this is not just a bowl. As you watch the video, you will gain a good understanding why each product is helpful and unique, and the ways you can use them to improve your overall all “dog-quality of life.”

  1. Dog Food Bowl. Not your average pet food store bowl. You will want two per pup.
  2. Manual Food Processor. Help your pup digest those veggies better.
  3. Large Roll of Poop Bags. Little rolls are annoying unless you’re on the trail.
  4. Portable Dog-Cots. Use them in the garden, on the patio, and outdoors.
  5. Vacuum Robot. Why did we wait this long to get this amazing thing?
  6. Planter Vase. You’ll have to watch the video for details 😉
  7. Large Microfiber Towels. For in between baths and to wipe those muddy paws.
  8. Slicker Brush. Catch’ em before they have a chance to “float”.
  9. Cleansing Spray. For a mini bath and to keep the bugs away.
  10. The BEST Dog Bed. Because our pups deserve the best night sleep.

Does Bathing Your Dog Feel Chaotic?

Don’t worry! We’ll show you how to bathe your Siberian Husky calmly, and even turn the whole experience into a fun SPA DATE!

I remember the days when the thought of bathing our dogs gave me anxiety and panic. They all hated the experience, and I dreaded struggling with their thick fluffy coats, not to mention their stubborn personalities and insistence on battling their way out of the tub.  #huskylife
